Vancouver, coffee and cigare.... er vapes!

Hi all. Forgot to do the introductory post.

I'm from Vancouver and as my pseudonym says, I like coffee. I've been vaping for well over 3 years now and was / am a 3 year regular reader and occasional poster to the e-cigarette forum (the global one), but only recently joined this board.

    Background
3.25 years ago, I was a 2 pack a day smoker, tried quitting dozens of times, incl. with those "Health Canada Approved" methods, never managed it. Then my wife, fed up with the smoking, brought back some kit she bought at a store on a visit to Warsaw Poland, and... I tried it. But I didn't quit with it. It was one of those two stage dripper / atomizer styled super long 808 style systems with really bad juice. But I saw potential, so I found a source with the Bloog (remember those!) little 90mah batteries and cartomizer 808s, found some juice supplier in Canada (a bit harder back then) that had something akin to my daily smoke (Dunhill Menthols or fancypants Davidoff Menthols) and the day after they arrived, woke up in the morn, and instead of reaching for the Davidoffs (which I had a few packs of), I reached for the bloog. Puff puff. Done my morning smoke. Washed face. Grabbed the bloog again. Puff puff, done my second smoke of the day. Made coffee. Puff puff. Done my third smoke of the day.

Next thing I knew, I went through an entire day without pulling a single stick out of the Davidoff pack. I did have to make adjustments. I was immediately (well within 6 hours) getting the lack-o-nicotine headache, and the flavour wasn't even close to the Davidoffs I liked so much (and the Dunhills), so I placed another juice order with the same supplier, got the nic boosted to 24mg (omg!), got the flavour increased too, and paid for overnight shipping. Got those, and bam, nic swirls (you know that dizzy feeling when you pull your first drag of the morning) and flavour was almost there.

Never looked back, but did the following over 6 months: a) reduced my nic intake to zero (for the most part) on gradual lowering of it; b) stuck with the Bloogs then moved onto other K808 systems for that time, c) every month or so I stared at that box of Davidoffs with still 12 cigarettes in it. (threw them out on my 1yr anniversary)

    Progression
Getting off nicotine (mostly lol) was a priority for me in that first six months, so I gradually reduced my intake, from 24mg to 18mg, then 12mg, then 8mg, then 6mg, and then for about 1 year, 0mg. But I unfortunately fell off that horse about 1.5 years ago, when I got some 8mg juice that I really liked everything about. Tried same juice with 0mg and it wasn't the same. Today, of my collection of e-juices, about half are 0mg, 1/4 are 6 or 8mg, and a 1/4 are 10mg; but I do cut down those 10mg juices to half or less while using them. Still, I'd rather get off the nicotine completely again.

On the equipment side, I went from K808s to clearomizers (omg), to tanks, and now on to sub ohm tanks, just starting with those.

    K808 Days (btw, I hope I remember that type right - maybe it's K808D?)
This is what got me to quit. But also much frustration with the cheap parts and quick-to-die batteries (both in vaping time, and just dying, no longer chargeable). I went through almost 20 various stick batteries during my first 8 or 9 months, having 2 or 3 on the go at a time. Even the little chargers all sucked, and would break or no longer charge after a month or two. But it was the closest thing to real analogs, and I believe that is what helped me quit - big box mods probably wouldn't have.

    Ego / Clearomizer Days
I bought my first basic ego style battery sticks and some of those top wick clearomizers about 8 months after starting. At first, it was really good - a lot more flavour, clouds, vaping ability; but the problems everyone had with the clearomizers would come through - leaking, dry hits, burnt, crap flavour, weird flavours, more. Still, I went through about 6m using basic ego 3.7v batteries and those plastic clearomizers.

    Ego / Basic Tank Days
Next, got into the basic tanks - first with Joyetech's old plastic internal tank systems (with those super expensive, piercing atomizers), then with Kanger's original protank mini, their unitanks (remember those PoS!) other brands' little basic tanks. Was on to something here, but problems with leakage, dry hits, costs (the expensive Joyetech atomizers!), and what I soon recognized was a power problem (the basic ego batteries weren't giving enough wattage), made me continue to look.

    Variable Voltage
I got into VV sticks - the spinners, the Ego-C batteries, other 'name brand' and clone batteries, to use with Protank mini, Protank II mini and such, and this was a big jump in flavour / clouds / satisfaction. Even let me go nic free again for a time. But leaks, occasional dry hits, faulty atomizers (I dunno if it's me and my luck, but I went through a LOT of faulty Kanger atomizer coils) still left me frustrated at times. Plus the devices were getting bigger. I don't like bigger in vaping. I like small.

To deal with the small, I had a "go out" system of a 350mah mini ego battery (not VV), and I'd put a protank II mini on it, without the drip tip. Underpowered (I'd use the 2.2ohm coils) but very stealth and portable. Barely produced visible vapor.

    First Mods
My first "mod" was a innokin MVP 1. Wasn't impressed. All day vaping from one battery wasn't a particularly high goal for me, size and portability was, along with vapor strength and flavour. Plus it had a wonky battery and died after about 5 months of use, both as a charger for my phone and for vaping. My next mods were the Vamo V5 (15W stick taking 18650 or 2x 18350 batteries) and some Siegelei stick (15W too, but 18350 only). Like most, got entirely confused over voltage vs wattage. I couldn't run any of my tanks above 8.5W on these things without burning hits. Was using most 1.8, 2.0ohm atomizers.

At this time, I discovered Aspire. I got the Nautilus mini first, and really liked that tank with the 1.6ohm coils. I'd run that at 10W on the VW sticks and tasted great (after I learned to pre-soak the atomizers!). Then I got the Aspire K1 (or its predecessor, then got the K1) with the BDC coils and this thing was frankly awesome on the 350mah tiny Ego batteries I had - not as much flavour or clouds as the VW / Nautilus Mini was providing, but a helluva lot more than when I used Protank Minis on them. I still use the K1 / Ego 350mah mini batteries today (sans drip tip) as my tiny, almost analog sized (well double the diameter) stealth out and about vape.

    Subtanks and More Mods
Next, and very recently, got my first subtanks - specifically the Aspire Atlantis and the Kanger Subtanks (Nano and Mini). Realised immediately my batteries weren't up for the job, so borrowed a 30W iStick from a friend and gave the 0.5ohm coils a go. Wow. Flavour. Clouds. Didn't need nicotine again! Ordered a 30W mod, and love using it... at home. Not out and about. Too big, too boxy, too obvious. Right now, I'm still waiting (and dreading) a Clouper Mini I ordered through FT, have my own iStick 30W on the way, and pre ordered the SXMini mod.

The thing is, I look back on all this and realise I probably wouldn't have quit analogs with these big (mini, but still big) box mods and big fat mod sticks like the Vamo V5. I needed something analog sized, and the K808D systems were the one. I wonder if quit success rates today are as high with these big mod boxes, big ego batteries, big 18650 battery sticks, compared to e-cigs that mimic the size and shape of an analog.

    A Bit More About Me
If you read this far, now a bit more about me. My history is in design, photography, and coffee. In fact, companies hire me to evaluate their coffees. I only work in the specialty coffee realm. I've been tempted to do e-Juice reviews in the past based on my tasting knowledge and experience, but always avoided it, but lately, I've been feeling the urge, as I've run into some new juices recently from various Canadian vendors that I really liked (and some that were bad). The thing is, I rarely post public coffee reviews in my other life, and this is the main reason I was hesitant to do so in this vaping life. I don't pull punches, but I'm also all about recognizing quality and good taste. I might post a few trial ones to see how that goes. I'll pull in from 15yr of professional (and trained) coffee tasting to do so. Be warned though, I'm not a big candy / fruit / sweets vaper - I like tobaccos (IMO, still haven't found any tobacco e-juices to mimic a good cigar or my old Davidoffs), caramels, chocolates, toffees, red fruits, mints and menthols, not so big on stuff like oranges and limes and candies and such.

BTW, I had a substantial cigar collection when I quit smoking. I had my first one (after quitting) on my 1yr anniversary of quitting). Then on my 18mo anniversary. Then on my 2yr anniversary. Then I decided, having one a month wasn't going to kill me, so I've been doing that, more or less, since. Got a lot to go through. They're well taken care of in a monitored, maintained humidor.

Well there you go. Hi all!

Welcome to Wacked Out! I like coffee too and tasting it for a living sounds like a sweet deal. Makes me wanna bust out the grinder and source out some new beans!

Interesting journey with vaping. I agree the bigger units are, for most, not the place to start. I began with the Innokin vv3 - small enough but variable enough to give me the best compromise and it worked for me. Also almost exclusively tobacco flavored ejuice.

Wow. Just noticed an old signature graphic I set up years ago on ECF is still running strong. Is it really true I've saved well over $15,000 and not smoked over 31,000 cigarettes since quitting? The Govts must be really pissed at me. In that time, I've probably avoided adding $12,000 to taxpayer rolls. And this is all based on analog prices 4 years ago.

    Good times.

Welcome to the forum ! I'm also a coffee addict and generally only vape ' tobacco ' flavours. I for one would be interested in any reviews that you want to put out there. As a coffee taster , you must have a pretty good palate and your take on tobacco flavours could be quite useful to many of us.

Nice post!! I enjoyed the read through. Welcome to the mix, there are a bunch of exp vapers here. I am about to hit the 2 yr mark next month, and although, I have yet to get in to sub vaping. I am more than happy, I learned about a year ago (my 1yr of vaping), that trying to keep up with this industry is close to impossible and after several very high priced additions to me collection realized they weren't for me. I was using my iStick daily, a Provari regularly, but always have an ego vv battery or two loaded with me. I still like them, they work just fine....I do have to say, after reading about your experience and your recent delve into sub tanks, I might just have to give one a go

+1 to you giving juice reviews a go, I agree, your refined taste buds give you a good start!! As for tobacco flavours, I really never got in to them, I just started in the last 6 months stocking a few, but I have yet to find one that I would say WOW..that's great...in the sense, that you can truly appreciate a hand crafted premium cigar, or a well aged whisky. That's what I have yet to find.

Again, welcome and hope you enjoy your stay!
