View Full Version : Alternative to using SS wire rope wick

I have been reading/hearing lots of good things about using SS wire rope as the wick for the RBAs. I wouldn't mind trying it but in the interim I thought why not try this ... 3 or 4 mini #400 mesh wicks twisted together and enclosed in a casing of #400 mesh.

Works great! :clap2:

I've done it, and it does work (though I have never used the SS cable so can't compare). The inside wicks have to made from a really thin strip and are a pain to roll like you would a regular wick. I found it easier to roll them at an angle...hope this helps (my mesh is not handy):

once you get that first bit started it's easy. Used 325 and put a single layer of mesh around the "core".

Wife has been using the rope in her Orion for 3 days now. She likes it.

Where did you get the wire rope from and what is the diameter you are using , 2 mm?

Nor can I compare to the wire rope but the results that you and I use are giving great results. I have gone three tanks with the initial one I made and no drys hits, exceptional wicking, lots of vapor and great flavour. Little to no tipping required.

I can't remember the size but it's a little loose in the hole I got it from west marine.

I also had to unwind it a little and remove the nylon thread from the center.

SS cable is amazing with a dual coil aga t! I mean monstrous clouds. Just pull out the silica screw negative post. I don't have a 2 mm cobalt drill bit so I can't drill in a fill hole but it works pretty good either way.

I just drilled my wick hole on my AGA to 9/64 and put a 7x19 SS 1/8" cable in it. It's unreal I cannot get this thing to run dry on a 0.6ohm coil! I'm a believer now. I just need to find 3/32 and 1/16 cables so I can try some other builds.

I wonder if I should order the 7 x 19 instead: Looks like better wicking action with the 7 x 19

I ordered both ... have to wait for e-mail from them before knowing the final cost because they need to calculate the shipping cost.

I bet it has some great capillary action around the middle.

I'm using the 7x19 and it is having zero issues wicking.

I got the quote back from SI for 3 meters of the 7 x 19 wire rope: $24.00 CAD. Not sure why I need 9 feet of this stuff but if it does work well I won't need any for a very long time :)

Have you bought it yet ? I have some 3/32 7x19 here soon to try out and you're more than welcome to a foot of it.

Edit, never mind I just looked up and saw that you ordered it. I got 10ft on eBay for 12$ and 5$ shipping.
